As an ever growing and developing tourist center, Torre La Mata – or simply La Mata – offers a lovely and unique Spanish feel to it and is only a quick five-minute drive from Pinomar. The town offers everything from shops, restaurants, and cafes to grab everything from sun block to a delicious bite to eat.
While there, you will notice that nearly the entire town is surrounded by a large natural saltwater lake, which helps to form something called “Salinas de La Mata”; an official Spanish Nature Reserve. Thanks to this reserve, you can see a wide variety of bird life and species that make a home there, making it a fantastic place for bird lovers and watchers. Another option would be to enjoy some horseback riding available around the salt lakes in town, perfect for families traveling with younger kids.
If you are heading to La Mata to pick up some groceries or other various food items, a great option would be to head into town on Wednesday any time from 8am to 1pm to enjoy the La Mata Market. Here, you can find everything from fresh produce and foods to bedding, shoes, handbags, and handicrafts. Other supermarkets that are open daily include Dicost Supermercado located next to El Pozo Bar or Super Valu off Calle Atena.
If you like to discover some of La Mata’s great eateries, you are in luck as the options are far from few. For an early morning breakfast, be sure to check out MA Creperie or Sea View International Restaurant for lunch or dinner, which tends to be a favorite amongst travelers with plenty of great dishes to choose from. For another view of the beach, Zana Kebab offers a great atmosphere alongside good foods and drinks as well. Other spots to consider include El Pozo, La Mar de Bien, and La Despensa.
For those hoping to spend their evening out on the town, consider checking out some of the many great bars in La Mata. Besides the usual bars you head to for just the drinks, La Mata is also home to several fantastic tapas bars such as Il Bacio Beach Club. For a cold one after a long day, then head to either Kiosco Rocio, Bar Carlos, or Pub Boys.
